Mitigation vs. Restoration: What's the Difference?
Water mitigation and water restoration describe two distinct phases of recovering from a water loss — and understanding the difference matters when you're in the middle of an emergency or working through an insurance claim.
Water mitigation is the emergency-response phase. It's everything that happens immediately after a water event to stop damage from getting worse: identifying and stopping the water source, extracting standing water, classifying contamination level, applying containment where needed, and beginning structural drying. Mitigation is about damage prevention — limiting how far water spreads and how deeply it saturates building materials.
Water restoration is the rebuild phase. Once the structure is dry and verified safe, restoration replaces what was damaged: drywall, flooring, insulation, trim, and finishes. You can't restore what hasn't been properly mitigated first.
